Retinol for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know

Retinol is the gold standard of anti-ageing skincare. But starting wrong can lead to irritation, peeling, and a lot of frustration. Here's how to do it right.

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that:

  • Speeds up cell turnover

  • Boosts collagen production

  • Fades dark spots

  • Reduces fine lines

  • Improves texture
  • Start Low, Go Slow

The golden rule: start with a low percentage and build up gradually.

    Beginner Products (Start Here)

  • The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane - £5.50 at Superdrug

  • - Perfect starting point

  • La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum - £38 at Boots

  • - Gentle, with soothing vitamin B3

  • CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum - £16 at Boots

  • - Includes ceramides to protect barrier

    Intermediate Products

  • The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane - £6.20 at Superdrug

  • Paula's Choice Clinical 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol - £58 at Cult Beauty
  • Advanced Products

  • The Ordinary Retinol 1% - £7.70 at Superdrug

  • Drunk Elephant A-Passioni Retinol Cream - £62 at Space NK
  • How to Start

Week 1-2: Use once per week
Week 3-4: Use twice per week
Week 5-6: Use three times per week
Week 7+: Use every other night

After 3 months, you can try nightly use if your skin tolerates it.

    Application Tips

  • Apply to completely dry skin (wait 20 mins after cleansing)

  • Use a pea-sized amount for whole face

  • Buffer by applying moisturiser first if you're sensitive

  • Never mix with Vitamin C, AHAs, or BHAs

  • Always use SPF the next day - retinol makes skin sun-sensitive
  • The "Retinol Uglies"

Some peeling and dryness is normal when starting. This usually settles within 4-6 weeks. If irritation is severe, reduce frequency or switch to a lower percentage.

    Who Should Avoid Retinol?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding (use bakuchiol instead)

  • Extremely sensitive skin (try gentler alternatives)

  • Those using prescription retinoids
  • Patience is key - visible results take 12+ weeks. Stick with it!
